From Chocolate to Girls and Medicine, The 1975 are one of Britain’s shiniest exports. Formed in 2002, The 1975 has since grown to become one of the most talked about bands in the music industry.
On 17th February, I made my way, for the first time, to the prestigious Hordern Pavilion to watch this extraordinary perform live (… and let me tell you this – this concert is definitely a must-see). From start to finish, Matthew Healy, Adam Hann, Ross MacDonald, George Daniel and (newest member) Saxophonist John Waugh performed exuberantly to 5500 fans for an exhilarating two hour set. With a suave bottle of wine in hand, The 1975 began the night with their 2012 hit, The City. From the moment the trio stepped on stage, the crowd went absolutely insane and it was then that I realised that I was in for an exciting night. As an avid fan of their eponymous debut studio album, The 1975, I was in awe of the flawlessness and passion with which the band performed their hits. I can honestly put my hand on my heart and say that The 1975 are one of the best bands I have ever seen live.
Matt Healy played the perfect host as he proclaimed his love and support for his fans, encouraging them to keep hydrated and keep one another safe in the mosh pit. He charmingly thanked the audience for enjoying their music, while gallantly taking long drags of his cigarette. It wasn’t until their 18th song that Matt’s words truly made sense. As the familiar riff of Robbers resonated through the arena, Matt told the audience that he needed a girlfriend; consequently randomly picking a fan out of the audience. It wasn’t until the lucky girl reached the stage that the crowd went mad. In true British style, Matt embraced her as he fervently sang the heartbreaking lyrics of Robbers to her.
After two electrifying hours (… and a stream of sweat), the show ended following fan-favourite Sex.
Every part of the show was utterly perfect. From Matt’s irresistible voice to George’s intense drumming skills, The 1975 are a band you must see live. At the beginning of the night, I was at the back of the mosh pit; however, by the end of the gig, I was a few rows from the front surrounded by dedicated fans dancing as if nobody was watching. The quality of their performance truly encapsulates why they were named Songkick’s “Hardest Working Band” of 2014. No matter what your taste, The 1975 are the type of live act that stays at the forefront of your mind for a very long time.
So, grab your M.O.N.E.Y, take the Girls out for An Encounter in The City, and let your Heart Out for The 1975.
